Two of the fields of current mass spectrometry research involve seemingly disparate goals - mass spectrometry of larger molecules (or molecular complexes), and reducing the size of mass spectrometers themselves. This section will be a brief overview of some of the advances in each of those areas.
On the development side, this chapter will focus on some of the technologies that are current in mass spectrometry, and where they might be going. Some questions that this chapter will look into are related to the development and progression of new ionization technologies (such as APCI, ESI, MALDI, and SELDI) as well as mass analyzers and mass detectors (such as Orbitrap and TOF). There are some especially pertinent questions to each of these - in particular some relating to their importance on the current market - that will be discussed in this chapter.
