Synopsis
Mass Spectrometry ("mass spec") is a technique applied to measuring the masses of molecules or groups of molecules. This web page is designed to serve as an introduction to mass spec for the beginner or nonspecialist. Chapters of this document will cover the theory as well as the application of mass spec, while also devoting time to specific current applications of mass spec in the biological sciences.
Chapter Descriptions
- This page begins with an introduction to mass spec, with some brief discussion on what mass spec is used for and what makes mass spec an appealing technique for those applications. A few key terms will be outlined in the introductory chapter as well that will be seen throghout this page.
- Chapter 1: History of Mass Spectrometry will discuss some of the historical progression of mass spec, with some attention paid to the scientists and companies that have helped to bring mass spec to where it is today.
- Chapter 2: Anatomy of a Mass Spectrometer will focus on the working parts common to many mass spectrometers in operation today.
- Chapter 3: Single, Tandem, and ms^n Mass Spectrometry is dedicated to the most common measurements taken in mass spectrometry, what they mean, and how they are acheived.
- Chapter 4: Reading Mass Spectra is concerned with the interpretation of the data sets generated by mass spec. This chapter also has a section dedicated to mass spectrometry resoultion and mass accuracy.
- Chapter 5: Liquid Chromatography covers the basics of liquid chromatography, with special regard paid to how it connects to mass spectrometry.
- Chapter 6: Additional Applications of Mass Spectrometry is a brief overview of some non-biological applications of mass spec.
- Chapter 7: Current Research and Trends covers some of the research going on around the world in mass spec that applies specifically to proteomics research. Trends in both instrumental and technique development are also examined here.
- Chapter 8: Jobs in Mass Spectrometry covers some of the job opportunities available for people interested in careers in mass spectrometry.
- Chapter 9: Background Papers and References is a list of review articles and other sources of information on mass spec.
- Chapter 10: Glossary covers definitions of some key terms that are used in this web page.
- Colophon, Credits, and Disclaimer concludes this web page with a description of the inspiration of this page, credits for sources, and a disclaimer regarding its authorship.
- What's new in version 2.0 discusses the new materials and new layout of this version of "Mass Spectrometry for Dummies". In particular this describes why you might want to read this document instead of the earlier version of the same
